Manchester United vs. Nottingham Forest History

There are a number of strong connections between Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, but perhaps the most prominent one comes in the form of a certain midfielder by the name of Roy Keane.

The outspoken Irish midfielder spent three years at the City Ground, racking up over 150 appearances, before moving to Old Trafford, signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for a then British transfer record fee of £3.75 million.

Among other players who have represented both Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, there’s standout defender Viv Anderson, forwards Peter Davenport and Garry Birtles, and midfielder Neil Webb, with arguably the latter three all failing to make the grade at Old Trafford.

Manchester United vs. Nottingham Forest Head to Head

These two have a long history of big fixtures, with the first clash being way back in 1892.

The first time these two met at Old Trafford in the Premier League era was in January 1993, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side running out 2-0 winners through goals from Paul Ince and Mark Hughes.

The year previously, Manchester United had defeated Forest in the League Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Brian McClair scored the only goal of what was a very tightly fought contest.

December 1994 saw Forest record a rare league win at Man United. Eric Cantona bagged the home side’s goal, with Stan Collymore and Stuart Pearce scoring for the visitors.

In 2022/23, the two teams met four times. On the 27th of December, Erik ten Hag’s men easily overcame relegation-threatened Forest, with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Fred all scoring in a 3-0 win.

The teams also met in the EFL Cup semi-finals. The first leg resulted in another 3-0 win for United, and that made the second leg something of a cakewalk, with again Martial and Fred scoring to complete a 5-0 aggregate win which was followed up by a win over Newcastle United in the final to secure the first trophy of the new Dutch manager’s reign.
