Manchester United vs. Burnley History

These two sides have met on countless occasions, and their Premier League clashes, though commonly ending in wins for Manchester United, are usually eagerly fought.

The two teams have had connections in the past, and for a time, there was seemingly an agreement for young talents who didn’t quite make the grade to be sold to Burnley, with the likes of Chris Eagles, Michael Keane, and Phil Bardsley being three such examples.

The first meeting between these two venerable English teams took place way back in 1892, and Manchester United have faced up against their relatively local rivals on over 100 occasions.

When it comes to league meetings between the two, there was a long gap between fixtures, with the Old Trafford clash in January 2010 being the first of this kind since 1975, which is indicative of the issues Burnley faced during the 80s and 90s, when they almost ceased to exist.

In that meeting in January 2010, Manchester United eased to a 3-0 victory under Sir Alex Ferguson, albeit they didn’t net their first until after the hour mark when Bulgarian legend Dimitar Berbatov scored the opener, and Wayne Rooney scored a second minutes later.

Mame Biram Diouf came off the bench to register a third late on to put a little gloss on the result.

A decade later, Burnley picked up their first Premier League win at Old Trafford, with Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez netting either side of half-time and giving Sean Dyche a famous win.

Burnley suffered relegation from the top division in 2021/22, and in December of that season, United once again had the upper hand. Scott McTominay scored the opener before Ben Mee found his own net, and Cristiano Ronaldo, in his second spell at the club, made it 3-0 with barely half an hour played. Aaron Lennon pulled a goal back, but the damage had already well and truly been done.

In December 2022, the two met in the EFL Cup fourth round, and goals from Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford assured Erik ten Hag’s men of progress to the next round and Manchester United went on to win the competition by beating Newcastle United in the final in February 2023.
