Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur History

Both these clubs are among the most recognised in English football and this is a fixture which both sets of fans are desperate for their team to emerge victorious from.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur first shared a pitch in the 1898/99 season, at which time the former still went by the name Newton Heath. Spurs won this FA Cup First Round tie following a replay.

The first league meeting between Man United and Tottenham came in 1909, shortly before United relocated to Old Trafford. To date, these teams have clashed on no fewer than 200 occasions, with several memorable matches over the years.

There was no shortage of silverware in the red half of Manchester during the tenure of manager Alex Ferguson, though the glory days now appear to be a thing of the past for the Red Devils. United won multiple Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League titles under the great Scotsman.

Meanwhile, as for Tottenham, trophies have been few and far between for many years now. Spurs won the FA Cup for an eighth time in 1991, and the League Cup for a fourth time in 2008, while the wait continues for a maiden Premier League crown.

These players have represented both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur:

• Teddy Sheringham had two spells at Tottenham, amassing more than 260 appearances for the north London side. Sheringham moved to Man United in 1997 and he was part of the historic Treble-winning team, scoring the equaliser against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. The England striker returned to Spurs in 2001.
• Michael Carrick switched from Tottenham to Man United in 2006, in a deal worth around £18m. The England midfielder had massive shoes to fill following the dramatic exit of former club captain Roy Keane the previous season.
• In 2008, Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov was involved in a bidding war involving Man United and rivals Manchester City, recently taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group. Sir Alex Ferguson pushed for the Bulgaria striker to pick red over blue, which he did, as the Old Trafford club agreed a deal in the region of £30m.
• Christian Eriksen joined Tottenham from Dutch outfit Ajax in 2013. The Danish midfielder played more than 300 times for Spurs and then transferred to Inter Milan in January 2020. Eriksen was unable to continue playing in Serie A after suffering a cardiac arrest whilst representing his country at the European Championship, and he later signed for Man United on a free transfer in summer 2022.

Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur Head-to-Head

In 1962, Spurs beat the Red Devils in the FA Cup semi-finals on their way to achieving back-to-back successes in this competition.

More than half a century later, the teams met again in the FA Cup semis in 2018. This time Man Utd came out on top, 2-1, before losing to Chelsea in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Spurs claimed a stunning 6-1 win in this fixture during the 2020/21 Premier League campaign. Harry Kane and Heung-min Son scored twice apiece as José Mourinho earned a precious victory over his former employers.

A few years prior, in 2012, Gareth Bale was on the scoresheet as the Lilywhites left Old Trafford with 3 points for the first time in the Premier League era.

One of Man United's most famous wins in this fixture came on the final day of the 1998/99 season. David Beckham and Andy Cole found the back of the net as Ferguson's men clinched the Premier League title – the first of three major trophies in the space of 11 days.
