Everton FC vs Wolverhampton Wanderers History

Both these teams were founder members of the Football League in 1888, and they have shared a pitch on more than 140 occasions. The vast majority of these meetings occurred before the Premier League commenced in 1992.

The 1893 FA Cup final was contested between Everton and Wolves The latter claimed a 1-0 victory to lift this famous trophy for the first time.

They clashed in the FA Cup quarter-finals in 1921 and again in 1939. Wolves were the winners both times before going on to reach (and lose) the final on each occasion, to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge and then Portsmouth at Wembley.

Everton enjoyed its most successful spell in the 1980s, while Wolves had been particularly dominant during the latter years of the 50s.

Wolves went through a turbulent period in the 80s, primarily due to financial difficulties, which saw the club succumb to three consecutive relegations. The men in orange and black returned to the top end of the English football pyramid after the turn of the century.

A handful of players have worn the colours of both these teams, notably:

• Everton signed ex-Scotland striker Andy Gray from Wolves in 1983 for a fee of £250k. The Toffees subsequently won the FA Cup followed by the First Division title.

• Joleon Lescott made his senior debut for Wolves in 2000. The defender transferred directly to Everton in 2006, costing a reported £5m, before making his England debut the following year.

• In 2007, Darron Gibson joined Wolves on a season-long loan from Manchester United. The Republic of Ireland midfielder was sold to Everton five years later.

• Conor Coady moved to the West Midlands in 2015, a year after parting ways with boyhood club Liverpool. He made more than 300 appearances for Wolves before spending the 2022/23 campaign on loan in the blue half of Merseyside.

Everton and Wolves went two decades without meeting in a league fixture, until 2003/04 when they contested a Premier League fixture for the first time.

In more recent times, Richarlison scored twice against Wolves in a 3-2 win for the Toffees in 2019/20. The previous season saw Wolves win at Everton, by three goals to one, with Raul Jiménez amongst the scorers.

On Boxing Day 2022, Rayan Ait Nouri found the back of the net deep into stoppage time to give the away side a precious 2-1 victory.

When Wolves visited Goodison Park in 2023/24, Saša Kalajdžić notched the only goal as Wolves returned to the Midlands with all 3 points.
