The first-ever meeting between these clubs came in the 1893/94 season of the First Division, five years after the formation of the Football League.

In 1896, they met in the FA Cup for the first time, as Everton won by three goals to zero. They reconvened in the same competition five years later and Sheffield United were the winners on this occasion, on their way to reaching the final for a second time. The Blades were ultimately defeated by Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton and Sheffield Utd continued meeting frequently in the early-to-mid 20th century. In 1925, the Sheffield-based side beat Everton in the Third Round of the FA Cup before going on to lift the trophy for a fourth time.

These teams have clashed more than 125 times, with the vast majority of these having come in the old First Division.

• Tom Davies was aged 11 when he joined Everton’s Academy in 2009. The midfielder made more than 175 appearances for the first-team and then moved to Sheffield Utd on a free transfer in 2023.
