Brentford vs Liverpool History
The Third Round of the FA Cup was the setting when these teams shared a football pitch for the very first time, back in 1906. Liverpool were the victors by two goals to nil.
Since then, these teams have clashed only a handful of times. There was a gap of almost 30 years between their first and second meetings. Following Brentford’s relegation from the First Division in 1947, they met Liverpool just three times over the subsequent 73 years – once in the FA Cup and twice in the League Cup.
In 1989, Peter Beardsley and John Barnes were both on the scoresheet for Liverpool against Brentford in the FA Cup quarter-finals. The Merseysiders won 4-0 and went on to lift the trophy for a fourth time, after beating local rivals Everton at Wembley.
Come the end of the 2022/23 season, Brentford had yet to win a first major trophy. Liverpool, meanwhile, had been crowned champions of England on no fewer than 19 occasions, in addition to eight FA Cup titles. The Reds also claimed the UEFA Champions League (or its precursor, the European Cup) a total of six times.
Spanish winger Sergi Canós moved to Liverpool as a teenager, from FC Barcelona's famed 'La Masia'. Canós switched to Brentford on a season-long loan in 2015 and, after making just a single senior appearance for the Reds, he joined the Bees on a long-term deal and went on to make 249 appearances for the Bees before leaving the club in 2023.
