Brentford vs Brighton & Hove Albion History

The first-ever meeting between these teams came during the 1920/21 season of the old Third Division. Brentford & Brighton each won at home and the clubs would continue to clash regularly for much of the 1920s and into the 30s.

In 1928/29, they met in the FA Cup for the first time as Brentford won this First Round tie, 4-1. From 1933, these teams wouldn't meet again for more than 20 years until the 1954/55 campaign of the Third Division.

Brighton beat Brentford, 1-0, in the Second Round of the FA Cup in 1974, and a similar result ensued in the First Round of the same competition in 1987.

In 1991/92, the teams played out an absorbing second round tie in the League Cup. The Bees snatched a 6-5 win over two legs, including victory at Griffin Park by four goals to one.

The Football League reformatted ahead of the 1992/93 season, after which Brentford & Brighton met again in the third tier. In 1998/99, they shared a pitch in the fourth tier of the league pyramid.

2014 was a significant year in the history between Brentford & Brighton, as they met in the second tier (Championship) for the first time – almost a century after their maiden meeting.

Brighton qualified for the UEFA Europa League in 2023 though, at the time, both these clubs had yet to win a first major trophy.

• Steve Sidwell emerged from the Arsenal Academy before moving on loan to Brentford in 2001 and then Brighton the following year. The midfielder later played for the likes of Chelsea, Aston Villa & Fulham, before rejoining Brighton in 2016.

• In 2017, Neal Maupay switched to Brentford from French side Saint-Étienne. Two years later, Brighton paid in the region of £20m for the France junior international. Maupay made a return to Brentford in 2023, on loan from Everton.
