The first-ever meeting between these teams came in the 1933/34 season of the old Second Division. They reconvened in the Fifth Round of the 1949 FA Cup. Brentford ran out 4-2 winners before elimination to eventual runners-up Leicester City.

Being a founder member of the Football League in 1888, Burnley celebrated trophy success in the early 20th century.
