The first time these teams met was in the 1935/36 First Division. Aston Villa earned a 2-1 victory at Brentford before they played out a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at Villa Park.
Brentford endured a turbulent period in the mid-20th century and the club almost ceased to exist in the 1960s. In 1992, the Bees returned to the second tier for the first time in 38 years.
Meanwhile, Villa were mildly successful in the late 19th century and developed a strong reputation as a trophy-competing team. The Midlands club has celebrated seven league titles (all in the First Division) as well as seven FA Cup titles.
The Villains won the First Division in 1981 before becoming European champions the following year, for the first time in its history. They even went on to beat FC Barcelona in the UEFA Super Cup.
Brentford and Villa have met only a handful of times and, so too, very few players have represented both clubs.
In 2019, defender Ezri Konsa swapped Griffin Park for Villa Park in a £12m deal. The following year, Ollie Watkins joined Villa for a club-record £33m.

In 2021, Brentford and Villa met in a Premier League fixture for the first time. For the Bees, this was a first season in the top flight for 74 years and it was also just the 15th meeting overall between these teams.
Ivan Toney’s early goal put the visitors ahead at Villa Park, though Emiliano Buendia drew the hosts level almost instantly and the spoils were shared.
Their first clash at Brentford Community Stadium came in January 2022, when the hosts earned a 2-1 win over Villa. In April 2023, the teams settled for a point apiece in a 1-1 stalemate.
