Deftones Biography

Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, and Abe Cunningham started jamming together as high schoolers in Sacramento, California, in 1988. Bassist Chi Cheng joined soon after, and the band signed with Maverick Records, releasing their debut album, "Adrenaline," in 1995. Frank Delgado, who had contributed sound effects to earlier records, became a full-time member in 1999, adding the turntables and atmospheric keyboards that would come to define the band's sound.

In November 2008, Chi Cheng was critically injured in a car accident and remained in a minimally conscious state until his death in April 2013. Quicksand's Sergio Vega stepped in as touring and session bassist from 2009 until 2021, and Fred Sablan took over the role in 2022. Moreno, Carpenter, Cunningham, and Delgado remain the band's core lineup to this day.
