West Ham United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers History

The Second Round of the FA Cup was the scene of the first-ever meeting between these teams, back in 1910. It was played at Molineux Stadium, the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers, where West Ham won by five goals to one.

10 years later, in the old Second Division, the teams contested a league fixture for the first time. West Ham claimed a 4-0 victory in this fixture at Upton Park.

After the 1922/23 season, the teams didn’t share a pitch again for more than 35 years. In 1958, they met in the First Division for the first time.

It was around this time that Wolves were a dominant force in English football, with back-to-back league titles towards the end of the 50s before winning a fourth FA Cup title at the start of the following decade.

West Ham and Wolves continued battling regularly for much of the 1960s and 70s, and less frequently in the 80s. When the Football League reformatted in 1992, both these teams were playing in the second tier which then became known as the new First Division.

A handful of players have worn the colours of both these clubs.

• Paul Ince was aged 14 when he joined West Ham, four years before making his senior debut for the club in 1986. He moved to Manchester United in 1989 and went on to make more than 250 appearances for the Red Devils, winning multiple trophies in the process. Ince also had spells with Inter Milan and Liverpool, before the 53-cap England international signed for Wolves in 2002.

• Former Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane was just 15 when he was signed by Wolves in 1996. He made his professional debut the following year. Towards the opposite end of his career, Keane completed a move to West Ham on loan from Tottenham in 2011.

• Carlton Cole climbed the ranks of the Chelsea Academy and joined Wolves, on loan, in 2002. The striker later signed for West Ham in 2006 and amassed almost 300 appearances across a seven-year stay with the Hammers.

• Matt Jarvis moved directly between West Ham and Wolves in 2012. After featuring 175 times for the West Midlands club, the winger moved to Upton Park in a deal worth an initial £7,5m.

• Wolves purchased defender Craig Dawson from West Ham in 2023, for a fee in the region of £3,5m.

West Ham United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Head-to-Head

Of their 70+ meetings to date, no fewer than 50 of them came prior to the Premier League era which started in 1992.

West Ham and Wolves both played in the second tier when it was rebranded to the EFL Championship in 2004. Teddy Sheringham scored the decisive goal to give the Hammers a 1-0 win in this fixture. Paul Ince lined up for Wolves that day, against his boyhood club.

In 2009, the teams met in the Premier League for the first time. Matt Jarvis rounded off the scoring at Upton Park as the visitors ran out 3-1 winners.

In the 2020/21 season, Jarrod Bowen netted twice as West Ham claimed a 4-0 victory in this fixture.

Bowen was again on the scoresheet when the Irons beat Wolves by two goals to nil in the 2022/23 campaign.
