The first time these teams clashed on a football pitch was in the Second Round of the 1913 FA Cup. A 5-0 home win for Aston Villa steered them all the way to the final, in which they beat Sunderland to win the competition for a fifth time.

Despite a history spanning more than 120 years, West Ham do not stand among the most decorated of English clubs, with trophies relatively few & far between. The Hammers celebrated a maiden FA Cup success in 1964 and then captured the Cup Winners’ Cup the following year. They lifted the FA Cup again in 1975 and, most recently, in 1980.

Their latest addition to the trophy cabinet came in the form of the UEFA Conference League in 2023, with victory over Fiorentina in Prague.

Following their first clash in 1913, the teams met again in the FA Cup – 64 years later. AVFC came out on top in this Fourth Round tie, a 3-0 win at Villa Park.

In 1980, the Irons & the Villans contested a quarter-final tie in the FA Cup. West Ham won, 1-0, and progressed to the final at Wembley where they saw off Arsenal by the same scoreline; Trevor Brooking scored the game’s solitary goal.
