These clubs first shared a pitch in 1906, in the Southern League. It wasn’t until the 1921/22 season that they met in the Football League for the first time.

West Ham and Crystal Palace clashed in the 1914 FA Cup, their first-ever meeting in this competition. The Hammers were 2-0 winners of this Second Round tie at Upton Park, before losing to the eventual runners-up Liverpool.

Following the 1922/23 campaign of the old Second Division, West Ham and Crystal Palace didn’t cross paths again for almost 50 years. That spell came to an end in 1969, when the teams first contested a top-flight fixture.

Palace were relegated from the First Division in 1973, before returning six years later having even dropped down to the Third Division in that time. In 1981, the Eagles once again dropped out of the first tier of the Football League.

In 1989, Crystal Palace were promoted to the First Division while West Ham had been relegated to the Second Division. Palace remarkably claimed a third-place finish in the 1990-91 season and subsequently became a founding member of the Premier League the following year.

After both teams dipped in and out of the top flight, they finally shared a Premier League fixture in 1994/95. West Ham won this fixture, 1-0, with ex-Scotland midfielder Don Hutchison scoring the decisive goal.

These are two extremely popular clubs in the English capital and, as such, there is a fair selection of individuals who have represented both West Ham and Crystal Palace.

• Ian Wright is best known for his time with Arsenal, having made more than 250 appearances for the Gunners. The former England striker played for Palace before moving to Arsenal, and he signed for West Ham upon leaving Highbury in 1998.

• Victor Moses was aged 11 when he joined the Crystal Palace Academy. He was just 16 when he made his senior debut for the Eagles in 2007, before going on to play for the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool. In 2015/16, during his time at Chelsea, the Nigeria winger completed a loan switch to West Ham.

• In 2016, James Tomkins swapped the claret and blue of West Ham for the blue and red of Crystal Palace in a deal worth £10m. Two years later, Cheikhou Kouyate moved in the same direction for a similar transfer fee.
