West Ham United vs Liverpool History

The first time West Ham United shared a pitch with Liverpool FC was back in 1901. The teams met in the Intermediate Round of the FA Cup, in which the Merseysiders won by a single goal to nil.

West Ham and Liverpool clashed again in this competition in 1914, this time in the Third Round. The latter were again victorious, but required a replay to get past the Hammers. It wasn't until 1923 that these sides contested a league fixture for the first time. Liverpool won at Anfield before West Ham triumphed in the return fixture at Upton Park.

Liverpool had been crowned winners of the First Division five times by the 1950s, meanwhile West Ham had to wait until 1964 to earn its first major trophy. The Hammers celebrated a maiden FA Cup title before Liverpool did likewise the following year under manager Bill Shankly.

The Reds achieved a decent amount of success under the legendary Scotsman though it was his successor Bob Paisley who took the Anfield club to new heights in the 70s and 80s. Paisley steered Liverpool to six league titles as well as three European Cups before retiring in 1983. West Ham had collected a further two FA Cup trophies by this time, but they were nowhere near the levels of success Liverpool had enjoyed.

In more recent times, the Hammers captured the UEFA Conference League in 2023. On the other hand, Liverpool became Premier League champions for the first time in 2020, by which time the club had also won Europe's top prize for a sixth time.

Players who have represented both of these clubs include:

• David James amassed 277 appearances for Liverpool after joining from Watford in 1992. The goalkeeper later spent two-and-a-half years at Upton Park, before eventually retiring as a 53-cap England international.
• Joe Cole emerged from the West Ham Academy in the late 1990s and earned a move to Chelsea in 2003. The attacking midfielder joined Liverpool following a prolific seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge, before returning to his boyhood club in January 2013.
• West Ham confirmed the signing of young Argentina defender Javier Mascherano on deadline day of the 2006 summer transfer window. After impressing during his time in east London, Mascherano was courted by Liverpool, managed by Rafael Benítez at the time, and he went on to become a mainstay in the Reds' backline before leaving for FC Barcelona in 2010.
• Liverpool purchased Israel winger Yossi Benayoun from West Ham in 2007. That same summer also saw Craig Bellamy move in the opposite direction, just 12 months after Liverpool had acquired the Wales forward from Blackburn Rovers.
• Andy Carroll completed a £35m move from Newcastle United to Liverpool in January 2011. The striker didn't quite live up to expectations at Anfield and subsequently switched to West Ham just 18 months after his arrival on Merseyside.

West Ham United vs Liverpool Head-to-Head

These teams have locked horns on more than 140 occasions, with several enticing battles over the years.

Andy Carroll netted in this fixture during the 2015/16 season, just a few months into Jürgen Klopp's tenure as Liverpool manager. Carroll scored the second goal in a 2-0 victory for West Ham.

The following season, on Liverpool's first visit to West Ham's new stadium, Philippe Coutinho twice found the back of the net in a resounding 4-0 win for the visitors.

The Hammers got the better of the Reds in November 2021. Kurt Zouma ultimately bagged the winning goal as David Moyes's side ran out 3-2 winners at the London Stadium.
