OGC Nice History

The club was founded in 1904, making it one of the oldest professional teams in France. Based near the south coast of France, the city of Nice is a natural attraction for visitors & tourists alike.

OGC Nice first became champions of the French Division 1 in 1951 and won it three more times before the 60s rolled around. Les Aiglons also clinched the Coupe de France twice in the 1950s and once more in the 1996/97 season.

Nice took part in the first season after the French top flight became known as Ligue 1 in 2002. The team has remained in the division ever since, placing inside the top five on no fewer than five occasions, but haven't reclaimed the title for more than 65 years.

In August 2019 OGC Nice was acquired by petrochemical firm INEOS, chaired by British businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, in a bid to close the gap behind the leading French clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain & AS Monaco.

Players who have represented Nice in recent years include the likes of France defender William Saliba, Algeria winger Amine Gouiri, and Denmark forward Kasper Dolberg.

OGC Nice in UEFA Competitions

The French side first played in the European Cup (now known as the UEFA Champions League) in the 1956/57 season, having won the French league title the previous term. OGC Nice were dumped out by eventual champions Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, and the same result ensued when these teams met again at the same stage three years later.

Les Aiglons competed in the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) in the 1970s but failed to leave a lasting impact on the tournament. In more recent times, Nice played Europa League football in the 2016/17, 2017/18 & 2020/21 seasons, and then reached the quarter-finals of the 2022/23 Conference League.

Nice don't have all too much history in UEFA's secondary club competition – or in Europe as a whole – with only a handful of appearances in the Europa League (and previously the UEFA Cup).

OGC Nice Stadium

The Allianz Riviera Stadium has been the home of OGC Nice since the ground first opened in September 2013. Also known as the Stade de Nice, this stadium has a 36,178 capacity for football matches. Les Aiglons previously played their home games at the Stade Municipal du Ray, from 1927-2013.

Allianz Riviera has hosted a number of popular events, including matches at Euro 2016 as well as the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games. There have also been several music concerts held at the venue, such as Celine Dion in July 2017, Beyonce & Jay-Z the following year, and The Weeknd in 2023.
