West Ham United History in Europe

West Ham's first European adventure took place in 1964/65 in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and they made a massive impact in their debut season in the competition. Manager Ron Greenwood led his side past Belgian side La Gantoise and then Sparta Prague in the second round.

In the quarter-finals, the Hammers met Swiss side Lausanne before easing past Real Zaragoza in the semi-finals to set up a clash with 1860 Munich in the final at Wembley Stadium. Over 97,000 spectators were present to see Alan Sealey score both goals in a comfortable win for the London outfit.

West Ham returned to defend their title the following season and were impressive in their run all the way to the semi-finals where they were ultimately toppled by Borussia Dortmund, 5-2 over two legs.

A decade later, in 1975/76, WHUFC returned to the competition and again showed their capabilities in the European pantheon. John Lyall’s side once again got all the way to the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final, where they faced Anderlecht in Brussels, and though both Pat Holland and Keith Robson netted, they lost 4-2 to the Belgian side.

Having beaten Arsenal in the 1980 FA Cup final, West Ham returned to the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup the following campaign but were beaten by Dinamo Tbilisi in the quarter-finals. The Irons played in the UEFA Cup, the forerunner to the current Europa League, for the first time in 1999/00 but lost to Romanian side Steaua Bucharest in the second round.

2006/07 saw the team once again compete in the UEFA Cup, this time failing to get past Italian side Palermo in the First Round. 2015/16 was West Ham’s first foray into the Europa League, though the Irons were unable to secure a path through the qualifying rounds and therefore didn’t even make it to the initial group stage.

In 2016/17, the same fate befell them, but 2021/22 under David Moyes was a different story as the east London side performed admirably to get through their group before beating Sevilla and Lyon to set up a semi-final meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt, only for the German side to triumph 3-1 on aggregate.

The 2022/23 season saw West Ham secure European honours for the third time, as David Moyes’s side captured the UEFA Conference League title. After a mammoth 14-game run to the final, they faced off with Serie A side Fiorentina in Prague.

Saïd Benrahma put West Ham ahead from the penalty spot following a cagey first half, only for Fiorentina to draw level five minutes later through Giacomo Bonaventura. Then, in the final minute of the 90, Jarrod Bowen scored the winner to send the travelling Hammers fans into wild scenes of jubilation.
