History of the Ukraine National Football Team

The Football Federation of Ukraine gained full membership of both FIFA and UEFA in 1992, shortly after the Soviet Union had dissolved. Ukraine's first international fixture following readmission took place in 1992, against neighbours Hungary, which ended in a 3-1 defeat for the Ukrainians.

Ukraine failed outright to qualify for Euro 1996, before losing in the play-offs for both the 1998 and 2002 editions of the World Cup as well as Euro 2000. In 2007, Ukraine achieved its highest-ever FIFA world ranking of 11th. This came a year after the eastern European country had taken part in the World Cup for the first time.

After failing to secure a spot at the Euro finals of 2004 and 2008, Ukraine finally qualified for the continental tournament by co-hosting Euro 2012 with Poland.

Ukraine National Team at Major Tournaments

The 2006 FIFA World Cup was the first major tournament which featured Ukraine following the nation's return to the international scene in the early 1990s. Impressively, the yellow-and-blue progressed to the quarter-finals in Germany but ultimately lost to eventual champions Italy.

In 2012, Ukraine played in the UEFA European Championship for the first time. As co-hosts of the event, Poland and Ukraine were exempt from qualifying.

Andriy Shevchenko inspired Ukraine to victory over Sweden in their group opener, but defeats to France and England meant the host nation crashed out at the group stage.

The yellow-and-blue narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and the same happened again ahead of the following edition of the showpiece.

Despite sealing qualification for Euro 2016, via the play-offs, Ukraine was statistically the worst team at the tournament – losing all three group matches and failing to score a goal in each of them.

A new dawn saw the eastern Europeans breeze to qualification for Euro 2020, finishing top of their qualifying group with six wins from eight games. Ukraine followed this up by reaching the quarter-finals of the finals tournament, which was held across the European continent, but they lost to the eventual runners-up England.

Andriy Shevchenko made his senior international debut in 1995, aged just 18. The striker went on to make 111 appearances for his country, scoring a record 48 goals, and also captained the yellow-and-blue on more than 45 occasions. At club level, Shevchenko played for AC Milan in Serie A and Chelsea in the Premier League.

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk earned a record 144 caps with Ukraine. The midfielder signed for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in 2009 after leaving local side Shakhtar Donetsk. Andriy Voronin played 74 times for his country and he also represented established clubs such as Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen.

Oleksandr Zinchenko won four Premier League titles with Manchester City before switching to Arsenal in 2022. The left-back also enjoyed a loan spell at Eredivisie outfit PSV Eindhoven and he has worn the captain's armband multiple times for his national team.

Mykhaylo Mudryk completed a mega-money transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea in January 2023, with the deal reported to be worth up to €100 million. Vitaliy Mykolenko joined English side Everton in 2022, from boyhood club Dynamo Kyiv.

Ukraine National Team – Home Stadium

Ukraine's home matches are primarily held at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv. This venue is located in the heart of the Ukrainian capital and has a capacity of 70,000. It hosted the Euro 2012 final as well as the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2018.

Other grounds which have hosted fixtures of the Ukraine football team include Valeriy Lobanovskyi Dynamo Stadium – the home of Dynamo Kyiv – and the 35,000-seater Arena Lviv.

Since the outbreak of the war with Russia in 2022, the Ukraine national team has been playing its designated home fixtures on neutral territory – predominantly in the Polish cities of Warsaw and Wrocław.
