For a country of its size, Romania have been relatively successful in terms of qualifying matches and making it to major tournaments, albeit only occasionally shining when arriving there.
The national team has a strong following around the world, aided by the wide diaspora of Romanians around the globe, and they have also produced a number of cult heroes and world-class talents, some of whom have excelled at the highest level of the game.
Romania took part in the first three FIFA World Cup tournaments and even made the Round of 16 in both 1934 and 1938.
There then followed a dry spell that lasted over 30 years, but by 1970, the Romania national team had made it back to the showpiece event, this time in Mexico. They even managed a group stage win over Czechoslovakia and were unfortunate to lose 3-2 to Brazil in their final opening stage game, meaning they failed to progress.
The 1990s were arguably the strongest period of Romanian football, and this was largely due to the exploits of one player, Gheorghe Hagi, who plied his trade with both Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.
In 1990, without Hagi, Romania got to the Round of 16 before losing on penalties to Ireland, and in 1994 they reached new heights.
Romania topped their group by beating both Colombia and the host nation United States. In the Round of 16, they pulled off a major coup by beating Argentina in a thrilling five-goal bonanza, and they then met Sweden in the quarter-finals, where they were unfortunate to lose on penalties.
In 1998, in France, with an aging Hagi, Romania again topped their group, beating Colombia and England but lost out to Croatia in the Round of 16 clash in Bordeaux.
Romania qualified for their first European Championship finals in 1984 but failed to make an impact. In the late 90s and early 2000s, they managed to achieve a level of consistency in the tournament.
In 2000, Hagi, now 35 years of age but still national team captain, Romania qualified from a group of death that included Portugal, England, and Germany.
They then met Italy in the quarter-finals and were defeated 2-0, with goals from Francesco Totti and Pippo Inzaghi doing the damage.
In 2008 in Switzerland and 2016 in France, Romania failed to secure a win in their group, having qualified for both tournaments with superb records.
After missing the delayed 2020 tournament, Romania qualified top of their group without losing any of their Euro 2024 qualifying matches. The Tricolorii earned 22 points out of 30 against Andorra, Belarus, Israel, Kosovo and Switzerland.
The Romania national football team plays their home games across a number of stadiums. The most popular among these venues is the Arena Nationala in Bucharest, which has a capacity of 55,634 and is a major modern stadium that has a retractable roof. This stadium has been used for a number of flagship UEFA events.
They also play in other cities and venues, including the Dinamo Stadium in Bucharest, the Cluj Arena, the Steaua Stadium, and the Ion Oblemenco Stadium in Craiova.
