About Paraguay Tickets 2023/24

Paraguay is a republic sandwiched between Brazil and Argentina, and it has a population of around 7 million.

As one of South America's smallest nations, Paraguay isn't particularly a household name in international football but the locals are always backing La Albirroja whether at home or abroad. You can be there too with the help of SeatPick.

History of the Paraguay National Football Team

The Paraguayan Football Association was founded in 1906, at a time when the initial popularity football was rapidly a rapid rise in South America.

Only in 1919 did the Paraguay national football team first contest an international match and it ended in a 5-1 defeat to Argentina.

Paraguay officially gained affiliation with CONMEBOL in 1921, the same year La Albirroja took part in their first major tournament. Then, in 1925, it became a member of FIFA.

In 1999, the Copa America finals were staged in Paraguay for the first time. The hosts topped their group and advanced to the quarter-finals but went on to lose on penalties to eventual runners-up Uruguay.

Two years later Paraguay achieved its highest FIFA ranking of 8th in 2001.

Paraguay at the FIFA World Cup

Paraguay was invited to take part in the inaugural edition of the FIFA World Cup in 1930, as one of 13 teams at the tournament. They lost to the United States in the group stage and thus didn't reach the knockout phase. Paraguay did, however, claim victory against Belgium.

La Albirroja missed the other two World Cup events before WWII and thus only reappeared at the showpiece in 1950. A loss against Italy meant another group exit for Paraguay. A similar storyline unfolded eight years later in Sweden, as the Paraguayans were defeated by France.

Paraguay returned to the spectacle in 1986, following an absence from six tournaments. The men in red and white advanced from the group stage for the first time, but they were ultimately knocked out by England in the Round of 16.

They featured in back-to-back World Cup events on either side of the turn of the century, making it to the knockouts on both occasions, losing to France in 1998 and then versus Germany in 2002.

Another group stage exit in 2006 was followed four years later by Paraguay's best return at the World Cup finals. At the tournament held in South Africa, La Albirroja topped their group which also comprised of reigning champions at the time Italy as well as New Zealand and Slovakia.

Paraguay then edged Japan on penalties, progressing to the quarter-finals for the first time, but fell to the eventual champions Spain.

The Paraguayans failed to qualify for each of the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions of the World Cup, but they will be seeking a return to the global stage at the expanded 2026 event.

Paraguay at Copa America

Paraguay first participated in the Copa America in 1921, when the competition was still known as the South American Championship. The following year, they ended runners-up to hosts Brazil and likewise to Argentina in 1929.

Paraguay were later runners-up at back-to-back events in 1947 and 1949 before eventually winning the continental showpiece at the following edition in 1953, narrowly beating Brazil in the title-decider.

La Albirroja claimed a second title in 1979, and the first since the competition had been renamed to Copa America. Paraguay overcame Chile in the three-legged final.

In 1999, on home soil, Paraguay were knocked out in the quarter-finals. The men in red and white claimed the runners-up medals once again in 2011, with a 3-0 defeat to Uruguay.

He made his international debut in 1999, aged just 17 at the time, shortly before leaving boyhood club Olimpia Asunción to sign for European giants Bayern Munich.

It was with the Bavarians that Santa Cruz became a winner of the UEFA Champions League in 2001 as well as five Bundesliga titles before he switched to Premier League side Blackburn Rovers in 2007. The striker later joined Manchester City and won the FA Cup with them in 2011.

Others who have achieved more than 100 caps for Paraguay include former defender Paulo da Silva (148), retired goalkeeper Justo Villar (120), and Carlos Gamarra (110). The latter played for SL Benfica and Atletico Madrid among others.

Paraguay's present-day stars include Miguel Almiron, best known for his time with Newcastle United, and Julio Enciso, who joined Brighton in 2022.

Antonio Sanabria was a product of La Masia, the youth academy of FC Barcelona. The attacker wasn't afforded the chance to appear for the Catalans' first-team and has since gone on to play for fellow LaLiga outfit Real Betis as well as AS Roma and Torino in Serie A.
