Southampton vs Norwich City History

Southampton FC was founded back in 1885, 17 years before the formation of Norwich City. Despite being the younger of the two clubs, Norwich won a major honour before Southampton did; the Canaries clinched the League Cup in 1962, in what was just the second edition of the tournament. Norwich recorded a second League Cup triumph in 1985, thanks to a 1-0 win against Sunderland at Wembley.

The Saints wouldn't celebrate a first major trophy until the 1975/76 season. The Saints defeated Manchester United, 1-0, in the FA Cup final in front of 99,115 at Wembley Stadium.

In recent times both Southampton and Norwich City have featured regularly in the Premier League, although the latter have been labelled a 'yo-yo club' due to their frequent movement between the top flight and the EFL Championship.

The first time these teams shared a pitch was back in the 1905/06 season, however it wasn't until 1920 when Southampton and Norwich first met in the Football League. Seven years later the Saints and the Canaries clashed in the FA Cup for the first time.

Southampton and Norwich City were drawn together in the 1992 FA Cup quarter-finals, with the tie forced to a replay following a 0-0 draw at The Dell.

The teams played out a seven-goal thriller in April 2005, with both sides fighting for Premier League survival at the time. Peter Crouch and Graeme Le Saux were on the scoresheet in a narrow 4-3 victory for the Saints, although ultimately both teams failed to avoid the drop to the EFL Championship.

Southampton picked up a 3-0 win over Norwich in the 2015/16 Premier League campaign, with Dušan Tadić scoring twice after Graziano Pelle had opened the scoring for Ronald Koeman's side.

More recently, Southampton and Norwich contested a 4-4 draw in the early weeks of the 2023/24 Championship. Four goals were scored inside the opening 25 minutes and then Norwich went ahead shortly before half-time. Adam Armstrong converted a stoppage-time penalty to rescue a point for the home side.

Former Southampton man Matt Le Tissier scored eight goals in 15 appearances against Norwich, including a hat-trick at The Dell in February 1990.

A handful of players have represented both the Saints and the Canaries, namely:

• Andy Townsend switched from Southampton to Norwich in 1988, for a transfer fee worth a reported £300,000. The ex-Ireland midfielder played more than 150 times combined for the two teams.

• Nathan Redmond signed for Southampton in the summer of 2016, aged 22 at the time, following a three-year stay at Norwich. The winger went on to play 232 times for the Saints before leaving the club in 2022.

• Angus Gunn first joined Norwich ahead of the 2017/18 season, on loan from Manchester City. The goalkeeper completed a permanent transfer to Southampton 12 months later, though he would return to Norwich on a long-term contract in 2021.
