Southampton vs West Bromwich Albion History

The first time these teams shared a pitch was back in February 1900. Southampton defeated West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup quarter-finals, 2-1, on their way to reaching the final, although that culminated in a losing effort versus Bury.

Eight years later the Saints and the Baggies reconvened, once again in the FA Cup, though this time in the Second Round. Once again, Southampton emerged victorious (1-0) and progressed to the latter stages of the competition, but lost out in the semi-finals to eventual champions Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Another two decades passed before Southampton and West Brom would contest a league fixture for the first time, doing so during the 1927/28 season of the Second Division. Only in 1967 did the two sides meet in the First Division, and this would become a regular fixture for much of the 1970s and 80s.

Their clash in the 1976 FA Cup was particularly significant, as it set the Saints on their way to clinching this famous trophy for the first time. Southampton thrashed West Brom, 4-0, in the last-16 before going on to beat Manchester United, 1-0, in front of an estimated crowd of 100,000 for the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

In 1992 the First Division was replaced by the Premier League as England's top flight, though Southampton and West Brom didn't clash in the reformatted premier division until the 2002/03 campaign.

Southampton vs West Bromwich Albion Head-to-Head

In recent years Southampton and West Brom have met in a number of different competitions, namely the Premier League, EFL Championship and the FA Cup.

The Saints claimed a 3-0 victory over West Brom in this fixture during the 2015/16 Premier League season; James Ward-Prowse netted twice before Dušan Tadić rounded off the scoring for the home side.

More recently, in 2023/24, the teams crossed paths in the Championship for the first time in 15 years. Adam Armstrong scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 triumph after Will Smallbone had put Southampton ahead at St Mary's.

Graham Potter is best-known for his time as manager of Brighton and then Chelsea, however he was also previously a Premier League footballer with Southampton in the 1990s. Potter left The Dell at the end of the 1996/97 season, signing for West Brom.
