Britney Jean Spears was born in McComb, Mississippi, in December 1981 and, by the age of three, was already attending dance lessons. At five, she made her stage debut, and in 1992, she was added to the case of the famed Mickey Mouse Club. Seemingly stardom was always on the cards.

Alongside her in the club were the likes of Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake and Keri Russell, and she was originally considered as a likely addition to the members of a female pop group by the name of Innosense but a solo career; instead, loomed large.

Signed by Jive Records, she released her debut single in September 1998, making her an instant star with Baby One More Time becoming a global hit, topping the charts in dozens of countries, including the US and the UK. It sold over five million copies in the United States alone.

Her debut album included other massive singles like Sometimes and Born to Make You Happy; her first album sold over 12 million copies in the US and was followed up the following year by Oops I Did It Again, another number-one album with the title track being another huge selling single.

Britney, her third studio album, also went to number one and her next album, In the Zone, saw her become a more mature performer, reinventing herself for a fresh audience and her number one single Toxic scored glowing reviews from even the most hardened critics. The single also earned her a first Grammy award, picking that up for Best Dance Recording.

Her move from what many might term a teen pop icon to one of the hottest pop stars in the world, attracting a different fanbase, led to a more prolonged period at the top and her longevity in the face of what is traditionally a very short shelf life is very much down to the support of the Britney army, her huge fanbase that has avidly followed her throughout her highs and lows.

2016 saw Britney Spears release her ninth studio album, which duly charted in the top ten across North America and Europe.
