FC Barcelona are one of the most iconic football clubs in the world to have ever existed and a lot of that will be down to their domestic success in the Copa del Rey. Their efforts domestically have certainly opened eyes across the globe as to what Blaugrana can achieve when playing the sport. With a plethora of games being held at the 99,354 capacity Camp Nou stadium, the iconic venue is an incredible place to be when the tournament’s fixtures are being entertained.
Of course, the Catalan giants are famous for having a number of superstars to have played in their famous blue and red colours over the years, which has certainly helped their quest in trying to add a trophy to their cabinet each season. Men such as Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi are synonymous with Barcelona, whilst there are men such as Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Johan Cruyff and Luis Figo to have all made impressions for the club in the competition as well.
Barcelona have won the Copa del Rey on no fewer than 30 occasions, making them one of the best sides to have ever featured in the tournament. Those successes came in the 1909–10, 1911–12, 1912–13, 1919–20, 1921–22, 1924–25, 1925–26, 1927–28, 1941–42, 1950–51, 1951–52, 1952–53, 1956–57, 1958–59, 1962–63, 1967–68, 1970–71, 1977–78, 1980–81, 1982–83, 1987–88, 1989–90, 1996–97, 1997–98, 2008–09, 2011–12, 2014–15, 2015–16, 2016–17 and the 2017–18 editions of the competition.
The Blaugrana have also featured in numerous other finals, with a further 11 appearances, therefore showing how successful they have been over the years. However, these finals are less likely going to want to be remembered.
Memorable moments for the Catalan giants will include the 2017/18 final where they beat Valencia FC 5-0 and the 2008/09 final where they managed to beat Athletic Club de Bilbao 4-1 and then 3-0 just two years later. Another memorable accomplishment to happen for the Catalan club is that since 2010, they have featured in no fewer than eight finals.
For all their success, though, FC Barcelona have suffered some upsets in the Copa del Rey final over the years that would not have been accepted by fans. For example, the Camp Nou giants were defeated by Valencia FC 2-1 in the 2018/19 final whilst the 2010/11 edition of the tournament saw the Blaugrana fall in extra-time to fierce rivals Real Madrid, as Cristiano Ronaldo got one over Lionel Messi and co.
