Barely a season goes by without FC Barcelona being in European action. For a club the size of the Nou Camp outfit, it’s a given that they will be competing at the highest level, and that means that most seasons, in fact almost exclusively for the past few decades, that has meant UEFA Champions League football.
However, there are occasions when the La Liga side has had to slum it in the smaller, but no less grand, European competitions, as they did in 2022/23. Does that mean getting hold of tickets is any easier? Not really, though; with SeatPick, it really is child’s play.
FC Barcelona’s first season in the UEFA Cup, the forerunner to today’s UEFA Europa League, came in 1972/73 when they were dumped out at the first hurdle by Portuguese side FC Porto, 4-1 on aggregate.
The following season they were once again unceremoniously knocked out in the UEFA Cup First Round, with Nice this time being the victors by a 3-2 scoreline.
1975/76 finally saw FC Barcelona make an impact. They went on a strong run all the way to the Semi-Finals of the competition when they went up against Liverpool. They lost the home leg, with John Toshack scoring the only goal of the game. In the second leg, they tried hard to get back on par but could only draw 1-1 and therefore were eliminated from the competition, with their Anfield opponents going on to win the UEFA Cup Final against Club Brugge.
1977/78 saw FC Barcelona make it to the Semi-Finals again, and indeed they reached that milestone in both 1995/96 and 2000/01, losing on each and every occasion they made it to the final four of the competition.
This is in marked contrast to their efforts in the former UEFA European Cup Winners’ Cup, which they won on four occasions, the final one coming in 1997 when they defeated Paris Saint Germain by a single goal, scored by the great Ronaldo in Rotterdam.
In 2020/21, FC Barcelona were demoted to the Europa League from the UEFA Champions League after failing to secure a top-two berth in the Group Stage. They were drawn against Napoli in a tricky tie in the first knockout round and could only muster a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou.
However, away in Naples, they put on a superb display with goals from Jordi Alba, Frenkie de Jong, Gerard Pique, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, helping Xavi’s side to secure a 4-2 win in Italy.
In the Round of 16, they came up against Turkish giants Galatasaray and once again drew their home leg but managed to get a 2-1 away win in Istanbul thanks to goals from Pedri and Aubameyang.
They were shocked by Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League Quarter-Finals though when the Bundesliga side rushed into a 3-0 lead at Barcelona, though the home side did manage to pull back two goals very late on.
This came after an away draw, and that meant Xavi’s side had been knocked out of the competition.
Once again, Barcelona found themselves in the UEFA Europa League knockout stage in 2022/23 after failing to negotiate their UEFA Champions League group, and that set up arguably one of the biggest ties to have occurred in the recent history of the competition.
They went up against Premier League giants Manchester United and the two teams fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Catalonia. Marcos Alonso had given FC Barcelona the lead, only for Marcus Rashford to level two minutes later, and then an own goal from French international defender Jules Kounde gave the away side the lead.
Fortunately, Raphina equalized late on to set up a grandstand occasion at Old Trafford for the second leg. Polish goal machine Robert Lewandowski gave Xavi’s side the lead from the spot after 18 minutes, but Erik ten Hag’s side fought back after a spirited second half to win, with goals from Fred and Anthony doing the damage and sending FC Barcelona out of the competition.
Fans from around the world flock to Camp Nou to see FC Barcelona in action and will do so at every available opportunity. That means getting tickets to see the massive institution in action will be very difficult, even for the UEFA Europa League.
