AFC Ajax are one of the most successful clubs in continental football, winning a total of four European Cups. Therefore, it's no surprise that their fans are ready to roar their team to victory in European competition. De Godenzonen have a passionate fanbase that regularly fill the 55,885 Johan Cruyff Arena, which is an incredible place to be on matchdays.

The Dutch giants have had a number of world-renowned figures play for their side over the years, which in part has been down to their academy's ability to produce incredible talent. Legends such Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Rafael van der Vaart, and Christian Eriksen and many others have all come through the youth ranks in a real whos-who of world-class talent. Recent years have seen men like Andre Onana, Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Hakim Ziyech all feature for Ajax in Europa League campaigns.

Indeed, with all that sheer quality, AFC Ajax have enjoyed tremendous success within Holland and in European competitions. Yet, they've only lifted the Europa League trophy on one occasion, enjoying greater success in Europe’s elite club competition instead; the UEFA Champions League.

The Amsterdam-based giants’ single success came in the 1991/92 edition of the tournament, when it was named the UEFA Cup. They beat Torino FC on away goals when the final was still competed over two legs. Ajax reached the Europa League final in the 2016/17 season, but were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United in Stockholm.

Whilst fans will have had better memories of the club’s escapades in the Champions League, especially throughout the 1970s, there have been some great moments in the continent’s so-called secondary club competition.

AFC Ajax produced some classic matches against the likes of Schalke 04 and Olympique de Lyonnais in the 2016/17 competition in their efforts to reach the final.

However, there could be an argument or feeling amongst the club’s die-hard fanbase that the Dutch side do struggle to rise to the occasion when competing in the Europa League at times, as many past tournaments have seen the Amsterdam outfit fall well short of expectations.

Die Godenzonen have been beaten by the likes of Union Berlin, Steaua Bucharest and Getafe in recent knockout ties, when they would have likely been favoured to progress. Poor performances against the likes of Rosenborg and Molde have seen the club fail to make it to or out of the Group Stages in previous years.
