Tottenham Hotspur History in the Europa League

THFC have plenty of history playing in this competition. Spurs were two-time winners of the UEFA Cup, precursor to the Europa League, and were regular participants in the tournament during the early 1970s and mid-80s.

This century, Tottenham featured in each of the final three UEFA Cup campaigns before the tournament was rebranded in 2009. Many of Tottenham's best showings in UEFA's secondary club competition came prior to the Europa League era, when the tournament was still known as the UEFA Cup. Spurs lifted for this trophy for the first time in 1972, defeating fellow English side Wolves in the two-legged final.

THFC would reach the final again in 1974, but ultimately lost out to Dutch outfit Feyenoord. 10 years later Tottenham beat Anderlecht to reclaim the UEFA Cup title.

Further victories in this tournament came in 1984 - thanks to a penalty shoot-out over Anderlecht. Followed by victory over Manchester United, 41 years later, in 2025.

Prior to 2025, the 2012/13 campaign was the closest Spurs have come to Europa League success. The Premier League side advanced to the quarter-finals before crashing out to Basel on penalties. London rivals Chelsea would go on to win the Europa League that term.

In 2021 the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hosted Europa League games for the first time. Spurs faced Austrian club Wolfsberger, winning 4-0, and then Dinamo Zagreb in the Round of 16. Despite the matches being played behind closed doors, Tottenham won both home games with Harry Kane twice on target in a 2-0 victory over Zagreb.

This tournament will live long in the memory for Spurs fans after the 2025 victory. Manager Ange Postecoglu had promised a trophy in his second season and it came to fruition with victory over Manchester United in Bilbao.
