In 2007/08, having finished the previous season in third place in Ligue 1, they got their first taste of UEFA Champions League action, albeit a brief run.

They were drawn against Liverpool in the Third Qualifying Round of the competition and lost the home leg to a single Andriy Voronin goal. The return game at Anfield was a little more clear cut, with Dirk Kuyt scoring twice while Peter Crouch and Sami Hyypia also netted in a 4-0 win on Merseyside.
