In 1967 Celtic became the first British team to win a European trophy when Jock Stein’s side edged past Inter Milan in a famous European Cup Final in Lisbon, with club legends Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers scoring the all-important goals.
They first competed in the UEFA Cup, the forerunner for the UEFA Europa League, in 1976/77, losing the first round to Wisla Krakow. In the 1990s, they competed very regularly in this competition, mainly because their Glasgow rivals, Rangers, had taken their place in the top European competition, be it the European Cup or the rebranded replacement, the UEFA Champions League.
2002/03 saw Celtic go on an epic run in the UEFA Cup. Martin O’Neill’s side were impressive in their 3-0 aggregate demolition of Premier League side Blackburn Rovers in Round Two, with goals from Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton doing the damage.
Celta Vigo and VfB Stuttgart were dealt with in rounds three and four. Then came a mighty tie against Liverpool in the Quarter-Finals, a tie that the Merseyside outfit were expected to emerge triumphant from.
Henrik Larsson scored in a 1-1 draw at Parkhead that appeared to give Liverpool the upper hand, but amazingly Celtic returned from Anfield with a 2-0 win courtesy of goals from John Hartson and Alan Thompson.
They then defeated Boavista in a cagey semi-final to set up a final with FC Porto, but heartbreakingly, they lost out 3-2 after extra time in a season that saw Swedish goal machine Larsson scored 44 goals in all competitions.
The following season they made it to the Quarter-Finals of the competition before being eased aside by Villarreal. Their first appearance in the rebranded UEFA Europa League came in 2009/10 when they failed to get out of the group stage.
In 2021/22, Celtic actually took part in three European competitions in one season. They first lost out to Czech Republic side Jablonec in the qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League and then took part in the UEFA Europa League, where they then failed to get out of their group after winning just two of their six games.
This led to them being demoted to the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they were undone by Bodo/Glimt, losing 5-1 on aggregate.
Any Celtic fan will tell you getting hold of tickets to see the Parkhead side in action is no easy task, and even if you are a club member, the lack of tickets available on general sale can be maddening.
Most of those tickets are, of course, already in the hands of season ticket holders and the holders of certain subscription levels in terms of away games, leaving only a small number left for fans braving the official website channels.
