In the next round, they destroyed the Hungarian side, Ferencvaros, 6-3 after two legs. Asprilla scored twice in the second leg, along with goals from David Ginola and Les Ferdinand, handing Kevin Keegan’s side a 4-0 home win, coming after their narrow 3-2 defeat in Budapest.

They then edged past Metz in the Third Round, and by the time they played AS Monaco in the Quarter-Finals, they were under new management.

The St James’ Park side went through three managers in the 96/97 season, and it was Kenny Dalglish at the helm when they were soundly beaten by the Ligue 1 side, 4-0 on aggregate.

In 1999/2000, they were once again in the UEFA Cup, having competed in the UEFA Champions League in between their previous UEFA Cup run. AS Roma knocked Newcastle United out in the Third Round on this occasion.

In 2003/04, having been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League Group Stage, Sir Bobby Robson’s side dropped into the UEFA Cup and went on a terrific run to the Semi-Finals.

They beat NAC Breda, FC Basel, Valerenga, and Real Mallorca before facing PSV Eindhoven in the Quarter-Finals. They drew 1-1 in Holland, with Jermaine Jenas scoring their away goal, and in the return leg, Alan Shearer and Gary Speed secured a quality 2-1 win to get to the final four.

Here they disappointingly lost to Marseille 2-0 on aggregate.

Their first appearance in the UEFA Europa League came in 2012/13 when Alan Pardew’s side impressed en route to the Quarter-Finals. They finished second in their group before beating Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv in the Round of 32.

They then edged out Anzhi Makhachkala in the Round of 16 thanks to a Papiss Cisse second-leg goal, coming in injury time.

In the Quarter-Finals, they were outclassed by Portuguese giants Benfica, who ran out 4-2 winners.
