They famously rallied from 4-1 down against Barcelona and Leo Messi in the quarter-finals, advancing on away goals. The Gialorossi faced Liverpool in the semi-finals and lost 7-6 on aggregate in a thrilling two-legged affair.

Newcastle and Roma faced off in the 1999/00 edition of the UEFA Cup. They met in the third round of the competition, and the Italians progressed 1-0 on aggregate thanks to a Francesco Totti penalty in the Stadio Olimpico.

Newcastle United vs AS Roma Connections

There are a few footballers who have represented both of these iconic clubs. One such player is Italian full-back Davide Santon, who spent four years at both Newcastle and Roma before retiring early due to knee problems.

French centre-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa also wore the black and white stripes of Newcastle and later the gold and red of AS Roma. He spent 18 months on Tyneside before moving to Rome in the summer of 2014. Yanga-Mbiwa only spent one year in Italy, returning to France to play for Lyon.

In the 2015/16 season, Ivorian forward Seydou Doumbia joined Newcastle on loan from Roma. However, he made only three Premier League appearances for the club in an unsuccessful spell in the north-east.
