AFC Asian Cup History and Information

The first edition of the Asian Cup took place in 1956, hosted by Hong Kong.

The tournament was altered from a round-robin to a group-knockout format ahead of the fifth edition of the competition in 1972.

The Asian Cup was expanded to 10 participating teams in 1980, and later to 16 teams in 2004. The 17th edition of the tournament was held in 2019 and it saw the pool further expanded to 24 competing nations.

Top Players at AFC Asian Cup

Former Iran striker Ali Daei scored 14 goals overall at the Asian Cup, more than any other player as of the start of the 2023 edition. Eight of those strikes came at the 1996 tournament alone, as Iran claimed a third-place finish.

Qatar forward Almoez Ali netted nine times at the 2019 Asian Cup, the most any player has scored at a single edition of the event.

Parviz Ghelichkhani, the midfielder who represented Iran in the 1960s and 70s, remains the only player to have won three winner's medals at the Asian Cup.

Today, some of the best-known stars at the AFC Asian Cup include South Korea talisman Heung-min Son and Japan winger Takefusa Kubo.

Most Successful Teams at AFC Asian Cup

In 2011, Japan became the first nation to win this tournament four times. The Samurai Blue triumphed in three editions out of four from 2000-2011, adding to their maiden title won in 1992.

Saudi Arabia won the Asian Cup for a third time in 1996, two decades after Iran became the first team to achieve this feat.

South Korea won back-to-back titles in 1956 and 1960, though the Tigers of Asia lost each of their next four appearances in the Asian Cup final (1972, 1980, 1988, 2015).

Australia were crowned winners of this competition for the first time in 2015, defeating South Korea in the Asian Cup final held in Sydney.

Kuwait, Iraq, and Qatar have also been winners of this competition in years gone by.
