2015/16 ended in similar circumstances, with Liverpool having too much for Marcelino’s side, knocking them out 3-1 in another heartbreaking UEFA Europa League Semi-Final.

2020/21 finally brought their runs of finale disasters as Villarreal beat a slew of great teams, including Arsenal, en route to meeting Manchester United in the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League Final in Gdansk, Poland.

Popular striker Gerard opened the scoring for Villarreal after 29 minutes, but Edinson Cavani leveled early in the second half, and the game went on to a lengthy penalty shoot-out. Incredibly, 21 successive penalties were fired home only for Manchester United keeper David De Gea to see his spot-kick saved by Geronimo Rulli to give Unai Emery the side’s maiden European trophy.

Emery followed up that triumph with a fine run to the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals, where they were easily outdone by Liverpool.
