In 1988/89, Bayern Munich defeated Legia Warsaw, DAC, Internazionale, and Hearts to get to the UEFA Cup Semi-Final, where they met another Italian side, Napoli, who knocked them out 4-2 on aggregate.

In 1995/96, Bayern Munich went on their best UEFA Cup run to date. Franz Beckenbaeur’s side met Bordeaux in the final and won the first leg 2-0 thanks to goals from Thomas Helmer and Mehmet Scholl.

Scholl netted again in France to effectively put the game out of reach for Bordeaux, and Bayern Munich eased to 5-1 aggregate success to go on to lift the UEFA Cup trophy for the first time.

In 2007/08, then returned to the competition before being surprisingly thumped by Zenit Saint Petersburg 5-1 in the Semi-Finals. That was the last time the club had failed to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League.
