CD Leganes certainly are not one of the biggest sides in Spanish football, however they have been full of surprises over the years when they have participated in editions of the Copa del Rey. The club, who hail from Madrid, have managed to reach a semi-final on at least one occasion, but fans continue to go to the 12,450 capacity Estadio Municipal de Butarque when the tournament appears on their schedule each season in the hope they will improve on previous outings and cause even more shocks.
The club, who are also known as Los Pepineros by their fans or those associated with the team, have had some quality individuals as part of their squad over the years. Players have included the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Roque Mesa, Kenneth Omeruo, Alexander Szymanowski and Guido Carrillo as CD Leganes have looked to improve across the board.
As mentioned, CD Leganes do not have the best record in the competition, having only reached the semi-final of the competition on just one occasion in their history prior to the 2020/21 campaign.
Los Pepineros reached the Last Four of the tournament in the 2017/18 season, and they have looked to build upon that showing since as they look to start to mount more of a challenge with each edition that is played.
Indeed, whilst memorable moments and accomplishments might be a little hard to find for CD Leganes, the club did have a strong outing in the 2017/18 edition of the Copa del Rey that is remembered fondly by everyone associated with the club.
The Madrid outfit managed to upset all the odds in that particular edition of the tournament, as they managed to reach the semi-final stage, having beaten the likes of Valladolid, Villarrea (via away goals)l, Real Madrid (on away goals) before being defeated by Sevilla FC as they were so close to making their very first appearance in the final.
CD Leganes would then reach the Round of 16 in the following two editions of the Copa del Rey, signifying the improvements they have looked to make off the back of their success in the 17/18 competition.
