Aerosmith History

Aerosmith were formed in 1970 when Steven Tyler's band, Strangeurs, and the Joe Perry led band Jam Band met and combined. The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1973 and was a moderate hit in the United States and included the band's debut single, Dream On, which then went on to be sampled by Eminem on his Sing for the Moment track.

Get Your Wings (1974) followed before the iconic Toys in the Attic was released in 1975, and that album went on to sell over nine million copies in the US alone and put them firmly on the rock and roll map. On that album were a string of tracks that are now considered among the band's best, with Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way, and You See Me Crying still being part of the band's live setlist.

In the remainder of the 1970s and early 1980s, the band continued to produce successful albums and singles and were already developing a reputation as an awesome live act.

The 1980s saw the band continue their upward trajectory, with 1987's Permanent Vacation being another important release for Aerosmith. The album sold five million copies in the United States and spawned a string of hit singles, including Dude (Looks Like a Lady), Rag Doll and Angel.

In 1986 they teamed up with Run-DMC on a new version of their hit Walk This Way, which helped them to expand their audience base.

Pump, released in 1989, was another megahit album, selling over seven million copies in the US and included the hits Love in an Elevator, F.I.N.E, and Janie's Got a Gun. 1993's Get a Grip gave the band their first ever US Billboard Albums Chart number one and has gone on to sell over 20 million copies around the world.

That record included the hit singles Cryin, Amazing, Shut Up and Dance and Livin' on the Edge. In 1998 their track I Don't Want to Miss a Thing appeared on the soundtrack for sci-fi classic Armageddon and secured the band's first ever US number one single. The track sold over five million copies in the US.

The band released their fifteenth studio album in 2012 with Music from Another Dimension proving a commercial success and the band has been consistently out on tour ever since.

Aerosmith have sold over 150 million records worldwide over the course of their lengthy history and have won a host of accolades in the process. These include six American Music Awards, four Grammy Awards and being indicated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
