Leonard Albert Kravitz was born in May 1964 in New York City, the child of a TV producer father and actress mother; fame was always going to beckon for the youngster.

Among his early influences were Bob Marley, John Lennon, Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix, and he initially performed under an alias, Romeo Blue, keen to make it on his own without the family connections.

He gained experience as an opening act for the likes of Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and David Bowie.

It took a while for Kravitz to secure a recording contract, but Virgin Records clearly saw the untapped talent that he possessed, and Kravitz released his debut album, Let Love Rule, in 1989 and secured moderate success.

His second album, Mama Said, saw him break into the mainstream, with the record going on to sell almost two million copies in the United States alone. It also spawned a number of strong singles, including his first major hit, It Ain't Over Til It's Over.

His third album, Are You Gonna Go My Way, released in 1993, built on that success and was a number-one hit in the UK. The title track provided Lenny Kravitz with another major hit.

In 1998 he released American Woman for the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack to great fanfare, and the talented multi-instrumentalist scored a string of successful albums over the following decade plus.

His 2000 Greatest Hits compilation went on to sell over ten million copies and served as evidence of his growing popularity and commercial success.

Lenny (2001), Baptism (2004), Is It Time for a Love Revolution (2008) and Black and White America (2011) all charted well, and the prolific output was supported by a run of successful tours.
