Major Lazer were formed in 2008 and originally consisted of producer Diplo and Switch with their debut album Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do becoming a critically acclaimed release. Among the singles released from that album were Hold The Line, Pon de Floor and Original Don.

In 2009, among a number of high-profile appearances, they played at the Falls Music & Arts Festival in Victoria, Australia, as well as performing at the Coachella Festival the following year.

Free Universe followed in 2013, by which time Walshy Fire had joined the collective, with Switch having left and Jillionaire being a member at that. The group released a string of commercially successful singles from that album, including, Get Free, Jah No Partial, Watch Out for This and Bubble Butt (featuring Bruno Mars, Tyga and Mystic).

Two years later, the group's third album, Peace is the Mission, fully pushed them into the mainstream and a series of monumentally successful singles followed.

Lean On (with DJ Snake), Powerful (featuring Ellie Goulding and Tarrus Riley) and Light It Up (featuring Nyla and Fuse ODG). As part of their ever-popular live sets, the group played at a number of Mad Decent Block Party events, which further proved their ability to hold and enthrall massive numbers of fans.

In 2016, Major Lazer teamed up with Justin Bieber for the worldwide smash Cold Water, and the following year, they worked with Travis Scott, Camila Cabello and Quavo on Know No Better.

In 2020, Major Lazer released their fourth studio album with Music is the Weapon, once again securing the magical combination of commercial success and critical acclaim.

2023 saw the release of their fifth album, Piano Republik. The band's current lineup consists of Diplo, Walshy Fire and Ape Drums. The group have won a number of leading awards, including a Billboard Music Award for Top Dance/Electronic Song in 2016. They received their first Grammy nomination in 2020 for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Music is a Major Weapon.
