Earth, Wind & Fire History

Earth, Wind & Fire were formed in 1969 when Maurice White, Wade Flemons and Don Whitehead joined forces. They were experienced songwriters and they brought in Sherry Scott and Yackov Ben Israel joined, though it is worth noting that the lineup of the band has gone through a tremendous amount of changes over five decades.

That's The Way Of The World

The band's first big success was their sixth studio album, That's the Way of the World, which was a number-one smash on the US Billboard charts. By this time, the main personnel included Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Andrew Woolfolk, Johnny Graham, Al McKay, Larry Dunn, Verdine White, Ralph Johnson and Fred White.

September

1978's September went on to become one of the band's most iconic songs and was a worldwide success.

That record includes their first-ever US number-one single, Shining Star, which roared to the top of the charts. 1979's I Am was another big success and includes the classics Boogie Wonderland, After the Love Has Gone, In the Stone and Star.

Raise!

In 1981, the band released Raise!, their eleventh studio album, and it proved another monumental success, spawning another commercial breakthrough with Let's Groove proving a big smash hit in the US and beyond.

Between 1984 and 1987, the band took a break, but they came screaming back with their fourteenth studio album, Touch the World, which included the singles System of Survival, Thinking of You, Evil Roy and You and I.

By 1990, the band had left Columbia Records, but they still managed to thrive, albeit not in the same manner as in their pomp.

1993's Millenium was well received, and in 2014, Earth, Wind & Fire released their twenty-first studio album, Holiday, doing well on the charts.

A measure of how great Earth, Wind & Fire are as a live act is the fact that one of their most successful albums ever is their 1975 release, Gratitude, a double live album which went on to go triple platinum in the United States.
