Switzerland booked their spot at the Euro 2024 finals held in Germany, after claiming a top-two finish in their qualifying group.

The group consisted of Andorra, Belarus, Israel, Kosovo and Romania, as the Swiss won four and lost zero of their 10 qualifiers to punch their tickets to Germany in the summer.

Zeki Amdouni was the top-scoring player for his nation during the qualifying campaign, as the striker bagged six goals in 10 games.

Switzerland National Team History

The Switzerland national football team has not had the greatest record at the UEFA European Championship, and it took the best part of 40 years for the country to experience their first-ever taste of finals football.

However, plenty of top players have represented the Swiss national team over the years, including Yann Sommer, Ricardo Rodríguez, Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri, Denis Zakaria, Stéphane Chapuisat, Alexander Frei, and Hakan Yakin.

UEFA

Europe's football governing body, UEFA, is, of course, based in Switzerland with the UEFA Executive Committee operating out of Nyon.

Despite this, Switzerland failed to qualify for any Euro tournament between 1964 and 1996, whereas they had made it to the FIFA World Cup finals on a number of occasions in that period. They finally qualified for the first time at Euro 96, which was hosted by England.

Draw at Wembley

Things started well in the tournament, which must have come as something of a surprise to the Swiss Football Association, with the national team drawing their opener with hosts England. However, they slumped to defeats to both the Netherlands and Scotland to finish bottom of the group.

They failed to make the grade in 2000, and in both 2004 and 2008, although they made it to the finals, they failed on both occasions to get out of the group stage.

Home Failure

This was particularly disappointing in 2008 as they were joint hosts with Austria, with four Swiss cities being among the eight venues used for the competition.

On that occasion, they slumped to a narrow defeat to the Czech Republic in their opening group stage game and then lost to Turkey thanks to a 92nd-minute winner from Arda Turan.

Surprise Win

They did, at least, finish with a surprise win over Portugal in their third and final group game, which was not enough to secure a Round of 16 spot for the Swiss, and they were knocked out in the first round.

2016 offered Switzerland some redemption, with the national team finally making it to the knockout stages, this time in France.

They emerged from their group with five points from their three games and then lost to Poland on penalties in Saint-Etienne.

Into the Last Eight

At Euro 2020, the Swiss secured their best-ever finish at the continental showpiece. A draw against Wales and a win over Turkey was enough to sneak the team into the Round of 16, where they shocked many by beating France.

The Swiss then faced Spain in the quarter-finals and suffered a spot-kick loss of their own, but they had nonetheless showed real progression as a footballing force.
