Switzerland vs Finland UEFA Euros Tournament Record
The Rossocrociati did not enter the first UEFA European Championships in 1960 and then failed to qualify in each of their first eight attempts to do so.
That run came to an end ahead of Euro 96, and they started the finals with a solid goalless draw with England at Wembley Stadium.
In their second game, they were undone by two second-half goals by the Netherlands, and they went into the final group game with faint hopes of making progress, but an Ally McCoist goal gave Scotland the win at Villa Park.
At Euro 2004, they collected one point out of three and were once again unable to get to the knockout phase.
Switzerland co-hosted the Euro 2008 finals with Austria, but that didn’t aid their progress, with the Swiss suffering narrow defeats to the Czech Republic and Turkey before completing a morale-boosting 2-0 win from their final group stage game against Portugal.
At Euro 2016, they showed a marked improvement, emerging from their group without a defeat, with five points to their name, and finishing just behind France to secure a Round of 16 slot.
There, they met Poland in Saint-Etienne in a game that went to penalties, with former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka being the only player to miss from the ten penalties taken, leading to their exit.
At Euro 2020, Vladimir Petkovic secured arguably the country’s most impressive result in the competition when Switzerland came from 3-1 down to draw with France 3-3 and then won the Round of 16 game on penalties before they lost to Spain in the Quarter-Finals by the same method.
Finland have a fairly atrocious record in the UEFA European Championships. Huuhkajat have only managed to qualify for one finals tournament out of 15 attempts, and that came at Euro 2020.
At that tournament, Finland started by beating Denmark in Copenhagen in a game better remembered for the near-fatal cardiac event suffered by Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen.
Finland then lost to Russia and Belgium and, as such, failed to prolong their involvement in the competition.
Switzerland vs Finland Head-to-Head
Switzerland and Finland have never previously met in UEFA European Championship action, and their only competitive clashes prior to now came in the qualifying campaign ahead of the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
On that occasion, Switzerland secured a 3-2 win in Helsinki, and in the return, one-time Ajax, Barcelona, and Liverpool legend Jari Litmanen scored the opener in a surprise 2-1 victory in Lausanne.
