Switzerland vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Switzerland doesn’t have the best of records in the UEFA European Championships. They didn’t enter the inaugural tournament in 1960 and then failed to qualify for any of the next eight tournaments, a run that came to an end at Euro 96.

There they started well by drawing with hosts England at Wembley Stadium before falling to defeats to both the Netherlands and Scotland and therefore were eliminated.

At Euro 2004, they secured a similar one-point haul from the group stage, and then in Euro 2008, a tournament they co-hosted with Austria, Switzerland recorded their first-ever finals win against Portugal but still got knocked out early.

At Euro 2016, they finally made it to the knockout phase but were then knocked out by Poland on penalties in the Round of 16. Four years later, they achieved their best-ever finish in the tournament.

There they eased through their group before securing a famous win over reigning champions France. The Swiss found themselves 3-1 down to the French with 15 minutes to go before goals from Haris Seferovic and Mario Gavranović took the game to extra time and then penalties, where Vladimir Petkovic’s side held their nerve and beat Les Bleus.

They then came up against Spain in the Quarter-Finals, and on this occasion, they lost in the lottery, that is, the penalty shoot-out.

Romania have an equally patchy record in the finals, qualifying for them on five occasions as of 2023.

In four of those tournaments, they failed to get out of their group and failed to secure a single win. The only exception to this consistently poor record came in Euro 2000 when Romania somehow managed to beat England in a must-win final group game, with Ioan Ganea scoring a very late penalty to complete a memorable 3-2 win over the Three Lions.

They were then defeated by Italy in the Quarter-Finals.

Switzerland and Romania have played each other in the UEFA European Championships on seven occasions, of which six came in qualifiers.

The only finals game they took part in was at Euro 2016. On that occasion, a penalty from Bogdan Stancu gave Romania the lead before Admir Mehmedi scored for the Swiss early in the second half to complete a 1-1 draw in Paris.
