Switzerland vs France UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Switzerland first qualified for the UEFA European Championships in 1996, having failed to do so in the previous nine occasions they attempted to do so.
At Euro 96 they started with a good draw against hosts England but then lost to both the Netherlands and Scotland and were therefore on their way back home fairly quickly. At Euro 2004 it was very much the same story and even though they co-hosted the 2008 finals, with Austria, they still failed to get out of their group.
Euro 2016 saw a movement in the right direction, with Switzerland getting out of their group for the first time before losing to Poland on penalties.
At Euro 2020 they went another step forward, securing a memorable win over France, beating Les Bleus on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw. They then lost to Spain on spot-kicks in the Quarter-Final to end their efforts in a rather cruel manner.
France, as a two-time winner, are one of the most successful nations in the history of the competition.
Their 1984 triumph, on home soil, arguably put the competition on the map with the likes of Michel Platini, Alain Giresse, and Jean Tigana impressing in a flamboyant success, which came to a close with a comfortable 2-0 win in the UEFA European Championship Final in Paris.
They repeated the feat in 2000 at the tournament co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. That success saw a resilient French side come from behind to beat Portugal in the Semi-Final before doing so again in the final against Italy.
Euro 2016 saw France lose the final on their own patch, Portuguese forward Eder firing home a dramatic long-range winner at the Stade de France to break French hearts.
Switzerland vs France Head-to-Head
Switzerland and France have met on countless occasions in international friendlies but on just three occasions in the UEFA European Championships.
The first of these came at Euro 2004 when two goals from Thierry Henry capped off a 3-1 success in Coimbra, Portugal.
At Euro 2016 the two teams played out a dull goalless draw in Lille, a result that assured progress for both nations.
In the Euro 2020 Round of 16, these two played out their most thrilling encounter. Two goals from then Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema and a goal from Paul Pogba appeared to be sending France through to the last eight but Switzerland battled back to level the game at 3-3 and it was Kylian Mbappe who missed the all-important penalty to hand the Swiss a famous victory in Bucharest.
