Switzerland struggled to get to the finals of the UEFA European Championships and only managed to do so for the first time in 1996 when they played the hosts, England, in their first group-stage game and actually came away with a credible draw.

At Euro 2004, the story was much the same. An opening draw with Croatia was followed by defeats by both England and France.

At Euro 2016, the Swiss finally went one step further. A goal from Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar gave them a 1-0 win over Albania, and they then drew with both Romania and France to finish on a healthy total of five points.

That led them to the Round of 16, where Poland knocked them out on penalties.

Euro 2020 saw Switzerland progress even further. In the Round of 16, they were up against Euro 2016 winners France and fought their way back from 3-1 down to force the game to extra time and penalties, and the Rossocrociati edged through to reach the Quarter-Finals, where Spain dealt them a blow, winning via spot-kicks to bring their brave run to an end.

Slovakia have only previously qualified for two UEFA European Championship finals, the first of which coming at Euro 2016. In France they did fairly well to recover from an opening game loss to Wales to then defeat Russia and draw with England to make it to the knockout phase.

There they were humbled by Germany, losing 3-0 in Lille.

Five years later, at the delayed Euro 2020 finals, they failed to get out of their group.
