Switzerland vs Poland UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Switzerland have competed at five UEFA European Championship finals, and in the first three of these, in 1996, 2004, and 2008 they failed to get out of the group stage on each occasion, including the last of these, when they co-hosted the tournament with Austria.

Euro 2016 saw the Swiss finally make it out of the first phase of the finals, but their run ended at the Round of 16 stage when they lost to Poland on penalties.

Euro 2020 saw Vladimir Petkovic’s side take another step in the right direction when they shocked the footballing world by coming back from two goals down to draw with holders France in the Round of 16 before defeating Didier Dechamps’s side on penalties. They then lost to Spain in the Quarter-Finals.

Poland’s record in the tournament is fairly similar to their opponents.

They, too, have, on the whole, failed to make an impact on the tournament, being eliminated in the group stage in three of the four finals they have qualified for.

The exception to this rule came at Euro 2016 when they went all the way to the Quarter-Finals, having beaten the Swiss in the Round of 16 before losing to eventual winners Portugal on penalties in the Quarter-Finals.

Switzerland and Poland have met in the UEFA European Championship on three occasions, two of which came in the qualifying phase ahead of Euro 1980.

The only finals clash took place in the Round of 16 at Euro 2016.

On that occasion, Poland took the lead through Jakub Błaszczykowski before former Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri leveled late on. The game, which took place in Saint-Etienne, then went to penalties, with the Poles winning 5-4 to book their place in the last eight.
