Switzerland vs Portugal UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Switzerland have qualified for the UEFA European Championship finals on five occasions, though it took them nine attempts to first make it.

Of those five finals tournaments, their first three attempts ended in group-stage exits, but Euro 2016 broke that cycle, with the Swiss successfully making it through their group before losing to Poland on penalties in the Round of 16.

There, they were unfortunate to lose to a 119th-minute winner from Michel Platini, which settled a thrilling five-goal clash in Marseille. Incredibly, 16 years later, they were once again beaten by France in the Semi-Finals in extra time; this time, Zinedine Zidane netted the winner.

Four years later, as hosts, they would have expected to beat Greece in the final in Lisbon but somehow contrived to lose to the ultra-defensive opponents.

At Euro 2016, the stars aligned, and Portugal ran out winners of the competition when they took on hosts France, again, this time in the UEFA European Championship Final.

Fernando Santos saw his star performer, Cristiano Ronaldo, hobble off after just 25 minutes, but somehow they held on and won the game and the competition, thanks to a wonderful extra-time goal from substitute Eder.

Switzerland vs Portugal Head-to-Head

Switzerland have met in three previous UEFA European Championship matches, two of which came in the qualifying phase prior to the Euro 88 finals, which both ended in stalemates.

The third meeting came at the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland.

The Swiss beat Portugal in the third and final group game, with Hakan Yakin scoring both goals. However, the Portuguese still finished top of the group, and Switzerland’s run in the competition came to an end despite the victory in Basel.
