The first-ever international match featuring Greece was against Italy in 1929, three years after the Greek Football Federation had been founded.

Theodoros Zagorakis was named the Best Player at Euro 2004 and he went on to play a total 120 times for Greece. Angelos Charisteas, meanwhile, scored 25 goals in 88 appearances for the Ethniki, including three goals at Euro 2004.
