Netherlands National Team History

Despite the size of their country, the Netherlands National Football Team has produced some of world’s best players. The list is extensive and Johan Cruyff, Ronald Koeman, Marco van Basten, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Patrick Kluivert and Ruud Gullit are just a handful of superstars to have played in orange at the European Championships.

When perusing the level of success that the Netherlands have achieved over the course of the history of the UEFA European Championship, it would be fair to say that Die Oranje are one of the most consistent national teams around.

Of the nine finals tournaments they've qualified for prior to the 2024 edition, the Netherlands made it to at least the knockout stage on seven occasions.

They failed to qualify in the early editions of the tournament and finally made it to the finals for the first time in 1976, where they finished in third place. 1980 saw the team fail to advance from the group stage.

Stunning in '88

Though the Netherlands failed to make it to France in 1984, they arrived at the 1988 finals in Germany as one of the favourites; this was due to the presence of Milan-based trio Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, and Ruud Gullit.

Managed by Rinus Michels, the Netherlands did not disappoint, though they did lose their opener against the Soviet Union.

Wins over England and the Republic of Ireland got them into gear, and they then saw off host nation Germany in the quarter-finals, before they easily dismantled an organized Soviet Union side thanks to goals from Gullit and Van Basten.

The nucleus of the same side took the Netherlands to the semi-finals in Sweden four years later, and in England, in 1996, they got to the quarter-finals.

Beaten in the Semis

In both 2000 and 2004, the Netherlands reached the semi-finals, falling to Italy in the former and Portugal in the latter, both of which by the narrowest of margins.

In 2008 they got to the quarter-finals, and in recent competitions, they have been somewhat off the pace.

Faltering in 2020

In 2020 they sailed through the group stage, beating Austria, Ukraine, and North Macedonia, but then surprisingly lost to the Czech Republic in the Round of 16.
