The Netherlands have proven to be one of the most consistent performers in the history of the UEFA European Championships, albeit with some patches of poor form, and interest in seeing the Dutch national team in action is always high.
The Dutch football fanbase are something of a cult favourite at major tournaments due to their colourful presence and loyal support of their national team. Interest in securing tickets goes way beyond the borders of the country, and generations of world-class talents have helped build demand, and trying to get tickets to see Holland in finals of major tournaments is by no means easy.
Some fans will look to use UEFA’s official ticketing portal to get finals tickets, but that path is very unlikely to result in success, not least because millions of fans apply for a relatively small pool of tickets.
In addition to supply and demand not being in balance, the way UEFA releases tickets itself is something of a stumbling block. The first release ahead of the major tournament comes before the draw is made or even before any teams have officially qualified. This means millions of fans are applying for tickets without even knowing which two nations they’ll see in action.
At SeatPick, you have the best shot of making sure you can get hold of Holland tickets, and that’s because we work with hundreds of trusted ticket reseller services to bring users of our platform the widest selection of tickets to pick from.
This puts the power back in the hands of fans, who can then make an informed decision having checked the market, compared prices, and then found the tickets that work best for their wallets.
The Netherlands first played at the UEFA European Championship finals in 1976 when they were knocked out in the Semi-Finals by Czechoslovakia. At Euro 1980 in Italy, they didn’t make it out of the group, and they failed to make it to the finals of 1984 in France.
By 1988, the Dutch had a hugely talented set-up, and Rinus Michels made sure he got the most out of his team at the finals in Germany.
It didn’t start well for the Netherlands, though, as they lost to the Soviet Union in their first game before a Marco van Basten hat-trick against England got them into gear. A Wim Kieft winner late against the Republic of Ireland in Gelsenkirchen saw them finish second in the group and through to play West Germany in the Semi-Final.
After a cagey first half, Lothar Matthaus put the home side ahead from the penalty spot before Ronald Koeman did likewise for the Dutch. Then Marco van Basten struck the winner two minutes from time to see Netherlands past West Germany in Hamburg.
The UEFA European Championship Final saw the Netherlands play the Soviet Union for a second time, and on this occasion, they made no mistake and overran their opponents.
Ruud Gullit scored a header midway through the first half, and then in the second half, AC Milan hero Van Basten scored a memorable volley to clinch the win and the title in Munich.
At Euro 1992, the nucleus of the same squad did well in Sweden. Wins over Germany and Scotland and a draw with the CIS saw them through to the Semi-Finals, but on this occasion, their path was blocked by Denmark, who won the tie after penalties.
Over the course of the next four tournaments the Dutch were a constant presence into the latter stages of the competition.
At Euro 96, they were beaten by France in the Quarter-Finals after penalties; at Euro 2000, which they co-hosted with Belgium, it was Italy who sent them out in the Semi-Finals, again via spot-kicks.
At Euro 2004, Cristiano Ronaldo was on target as Portugal beat them in the Semi-Finals in Lisbon, and four years later, Russia surprisingly defeated Holland in the Quarter-Finals with soon-to-be Arsenal star Andrei Arshavin playing a blinder.
In more recent tournaments, the Dutch have not come close to hitting those heights but will be looking to make up for lost time at the upcoming finals.
Slovenia’s involvement in the tournament finals is in marked contrast. They’ve only made it to the finals on one occasion from the seven attempts they’ve made up to now, and that appearance came at Euro 2000.
A loss to Spain came in between draws with the Former Republic of Yugoslavia and Norway, leaving Slovenia bottom of the group and out of the tournament.
These two nations have only met in one previous UEFA European Championship campaign, and that came in the qualifying for the 2008 tournament co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland.
In March 2007, a goal from Giovanni van Bronckhorst gave Holland a 1-0 win in Celje, and the return fixture in August of the same year saw the Netherlands beat Slovenia 2-0 thanks to goals from Wesley Sneijder and Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
The face value tickets for this tournament have been priced by UEFA between $32 and $1,057.
