History of the Slovenia National Football Team

The Football Association of Slovenia was granted full membership of both FIFA and UEFA in 1992, a year after the nation had declared independence from Yugoslavia.

Following readmission to the global sporting scene, Slovenia played its first international fixture against Estonia. The contest ended in a 1-1 draw as Igor Benedejčič scored the first goal for the modern-day Slovenia national football team.

The teams reconvened the following year as Slovenia earned its maiden international victory with a 3-0 win over Estonia.

After failing to qualify for the 1996 UEFA European Championship and the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the Slovenia national team finally sealed its spot at a major tournament as the turn of the century loomed.

Slovenia National Team at Major Tournaments

The Slovenia national football team took part in a major tournament for the first time at Euro 2000, after beating Ukraine in the play-offs to qualify. However, at the finals, they crashed out at the group stage after failing to win any of their three games.

After winning none of their eight 1998 World Cup qualifiers, the Slovenians booked their place at the 2002 event by edging Romania in the play-offs. At the event itself, Slovenia's World Cup debut was a sombre occasion which saw the team lose all three group games to Spain, Paraguay and South Africa.

Slovenia narrowly missed out on qualification for Euro 2004 after ending 2nd behind France in their group. They subsequently lost to neighbours Croatia, 2-1, in the play-offs.

The Slovenians also failed to qualify for the 2008 and 2012 editions of the European Championship, winning fewer than half of their qualifiers on both occasions.

In 2010 Slovenia recorded its first-ever win at the World Cup, beating Algeria by a single goal to nil. Despite this, they didn't progress beyond the groups after a stalemate with the United States followed by a 1-0 defeat to England.

In the aftermath of the tournament hosted by South Africa, Slovenia celebrated its highest-ever FIFA World Ranking of 15th.

Following this, however, Slovenia didn't qualify for the next three World Cup events. Once again, ahead of Euro 2016, they were pipped to qualification via the play-offs. They were defeated by Ukraine, 3-1 on aggregate.

The 24-year wait for an appearance at the continental showpiece came to an end as the men in white won seven of their ten qualifiers to finish inside the top two of their group and confirm their place at the finals held in Germany.

Bostjan Cesar is the most-capped Slovenia international, having featured 101 times for his country. Bojan Jokić also hit triple figures for appearances before retiring from national team duty in 2019, while Valter Birsa earned 90 caps. All three players were part of Slovenia's squad at the 2010 World Cup.

Zlatko Zahović is the most prolific goalscorer in the history of the Slovenia national team, with 35 goals. At club level, he represented Portuguese sides FC Porto and SL Benfica as well as Spanish outfit Valencia.

Amongst the current Slovenia squad Jan Oblak has played more than 400 times for Atletico Madrid, winning the UEFA Europa League in 2018 and the LaLiga title in 2021. Before signing for Atletico in 2014, the goalkeeper had been on the books of Benfica.

Benjamin Šeško is one of the most highly-rated young strikers across Europe. He transferred from Red Bull Salzburg to RB Leipzig in 2023, for a reported fee of €24 million.
