Netherlands vs Poland UEFA Euros Tournament Record

The Dutch have one of the most consistent records in the history of the UEFA European Championship, with the Netherlands regularly performing well in the finals of the tournament.

They first qualified for the finals in 1976 and finished in third place, but four years later, in Italy, they failed to get out of their group. Euro 1984 passed by without the Dutch making it to the finals in France, but at Euro 88, they returned with a bang.

The competition didn’t start well for Rinus Michels’s side, with a goal from Vasyl Rats giving the Soviet Union a 1-0 win in Cologne. A hat-trick from Marco van Basten saw the Dutch defeat England 3-1 before a late winner from Wim Kieft took them through to the Semi-Finals.

A goal from Lothar Matthaus put West Germany ahead in Hamburg but goals from Ronald Koeman and Van Basten saw Netherlands through to the final at the expense of their hosts.

In the final, Netherlands quickly got into gear with Ruud Gullit powering a header to give them the lead after half an hour, and then, early in the second half, Marco van Basten pulled off a near-impossible volley to score one of the most memorable goals in the history of the game.

This completed a 2-0 win that saw Michels’s side lift the trophy for the first time.

At Euro 1992, they were surprisingly beaten by Denmark in the Semi-Finals, and at Euro 96, in England, they fell at the Quarter-Final stage. At both Euro 2000 and 2004, the Dutch were beaten in the Semi-Finals by Italy and Portugal, respectively.

Their more recent form in the competition has been patchy, and they even failed to make it to Euro 2016 and then were defeated in the Round of 16 by the Czech Republic at Euro 2020.

Poland failed in their efforts to qualify for the UEFA European Championship Finals at each of their first 12 attempts and made their maiden voyage at Euro 2008, where they collected just one group stage point.

The Poles co-hosted Euro 2012 with Ukraine but once again stuttered and fell at the first hurdle but at Euro 2016, they did well to get all the way to the Quarter-Finals before they were unfortunate to be knocked out by eventual winners Portugal after a penalty shoot-out.

Euro 2020 saw another group-stage exit for Poland, who arguably should have achieved a great deal more in the competition up to this point.
